New job opportunities for lawyers
Traditional lawyers in Spain are facing difficulties in finding a job; apparently there are many of them, so it is essential for new graduates to look for new opportunities. These can come in two different ways: One is getting a job abroad. This is possible in the case of other European countries that are part of the European Union, due to the recent regulations that permit it. However, in this case, the lawyer has to be able to speak the language of the recipient country, of course. On the other hand, if we are talking about the UK or Ireland, for instance, where the law system is different (common law system as compared to the civil system that rules in continental Europe) additional formal education is needed, as well as taking some exams.
This additional education (in the form of a Master’s Degree, for instance), would come in handy if you would like to work in the Middle East, for instance (Qatar, Kuwait, Arab Emirates, etc). Even though the legal system there is based in civil law (together with some Islamic law), for contracts they use the common law.
The other path a recently graduated lawyer can follow is that of the new technologies. Internet, telecommunications and renewable energies are an excellent option. In these cases, though, additional formal education is also needed. Post graduate studies then are a must. No matter how expensive they might be, in terms both of money and time, it seems like a profitable investment in the long run.
